Is Claude Design shutting down?

Anthropic is closing the standalone Claude Design site, claude.ai/design, on December 14, 2026. Claude Design itself isn’t going away: it already works inside Claude, and new designs are created there as artifacts. But chats and comments don’t carry over, and public links to standalone projects stop working. Here is what changes and what to do before the deadline.

Updated November 7, 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

  • Only the standalone site is closing. claude.ai/design stays usable until December 14, 2026. After that it is read-only, and you can’t start new projects there.
  • Claude Design continues inside Claude. New designs, design systems, and slide decks are created as artifacts in Claude, on the Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise plans.
  • Some things are lost. Your chats with Claude and the comments on projects and design systems don’t carry over, and public links to standalone projects stop working.
  • Act before December 14. Move your design systems now, move or export the projects you want to keep, and save anything you need from chats and comments.

These details come from Anthropic’s help article, Move from standalone Claude Design to Claude, as of November 7, 2026.

What moves and what doesn’t

ItemAfter December 14
Design systemsCan be moved to Claude now; empty ones and those made from a built-in starter theme aren’t moved
ProjectsCan be moved by their owner once the option reaches your plan; it is rolling out to paid plans
Chats with ClaudeNot carried over, and deleted some time after the closure
Comments on projects and design systemsNot carried over, and deleted some time after the closure
Public links to standalone projectsStop working
Standalone copies of moved itemsBecome read-only for everyone

Organizations with zero data retention can’t move projects, so they need to download them before the closure. Organizations with the HIPAA-ready configuration can’t move projects for now.

How to keep your work

  1. Move your design systems. Open the Artifacts page in Claude and click “Move team design systems” in the banner. One move brings over every design system in the organization. If one fails, it appears under “Didn’t move”; fix it in the standalone site, or click “Download design system” to keep a copy of its files.
  2. Export the projects you care about. Open a project, click Share, choose Project HTML (for slide decks, it is under More formats and apps), keep Project archive selected, and click Export. You get a .zip of all the project’s files, and it doesn’t count toward your usage limits.
  3. Move projects when you can. Only a project’s owner can move it, from claude.ai/design. Keep the tab open until the move finishes.
  4. Save chats and comments by hand. Copy any decisions, feedback, or prompts you want to keep, because they won’t move.
  5. Open moved items now and then. If your organization’s retention period covers artifacts, a moved item nobody opens during that period can be deleted.

Keep your design system in a file you own

The safest copy of a design system is one that lives in your own project. A DESIGN.md file records your colors, fonts, spacing, and component rules in plain Markdown, and any AI agent can read it: Claude, Claude Code, Codex, and others. It doesn’t depend on any one product staying open.

Once you have downloaded your design system or exported a project, ask Claude Code or Codex to write it down:

Turn an exported design into DESIGN.md
This folder is an export from Claude Design. Read the HTML, CSS and any design system files, and write a DESIGN.md at the project root that records the colors (as tokens with hex values), fonts and type scale, spacing, corner radius, shadows and the rules for buttons, cards and forms. Use only what is in the files; don't invent values. Then list anything you couldn't find.

Need a starting point instead? Our design system library has free systems with a DESIGN.md and a shadcn theme for each.

Your options after December 14

  • Keep using Claude Design inside Claude. It is the same feature, now in every conversation, with your files and connectors. This is the simplest path if you use Claude every day.
  • Design where you build. If you build with Codex, Codex Design adds a canvas to Codex for comparing UI directions as live HTML, stored on your own computer.
  • Keep your system portable. Whatever you choose, a DESIGN.md in your repository means the next tool starts from your design, not from zero.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Design being discontinued?

No. Only the standalone site at claude.ai/design is closing, on December 14, 2026. Claude Design continues inside Claude, where new designs, design systems, and slide decks are created as artifacts.

Will I lose my Claude Design projects?

Not if you move or export them. Projects can be moved to Claude by their owner as the option rolls out, or exported as a .zip from the Share menu. Chats and comments are lost either way.

What happens to my public Claude Design links?

They stop working when the standalone site closes. If people rely on a link, share the moved artifact or an exported copy instead.
