Codex vs Claude Code for UI design.
Codex and Claude Code are both coding agents that can design screens, not just build them. The model matters less than you might think. What differs is the design tooling around each one, so this comparison focuses on that.

The short answer
Both can produce good UI. The result depends far more on your brief, the design skills you install, and how you review and refine than on which agent you use. Pick the one your team already works in, then add the design tooling it is missing.
- Choose Codex if you already use ChatGPT, want image generation built into the same agent, or work in OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem.
- Choose Claude Code if you already use Claude, want a built-in artboard workflow through its
/designskill, or want the desktop app to preview your running app as it works.
Side by side
| For UI work | Codex | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | ChatGPT desktop app, web, and mobile; Codex CLI; IDE extension; cloud | Terminal, desktop app, IDE extensions, web and cloud |
| Built-in design workflow | None dedicated; add a canvas plugin such as Codex Design | /design skill (research preview) drafts a canvas of editable artboards |
| Previewing your app | Can use a browser in the desktop app | Desktop Browser pane previews your dev server and checks its changes |
| Design skills and plugins | Skills and plugins, such as Taste Skill and Figma | Official marketplace includes frontend-design, Figma, and Superdesign |
| Project instructions file | AGENTS.md | CLAUDE.md |
| Design system file | Reads DESIGN.md when you point to it | Reads DESIGN.md when you point to it |
Both products change quickly. Features marked as previews may change or move between plans.
Where Codex stands out
- Images and code in one agent. Codex can generate mockup images with gpt-image-2, then build the screen as code in the same conversation. That makes it easy to explore a visual direction before writing any HTML. See how to design UI with ChatGPT.
- It lives inside ChatGPT. If your team already uses ChatGPT, Codex is one mode away, and plugins installed there work in Chat, Work, and Codex in the desktop app.
- A growing set of design skills. Skills such as Taste Skill and image-first design skills install as Codex plugins. See the best Codex skills for UI design.
Where Claude Code stands out
- A built-in artboard workflow. Its
/designskill turns a brief into a canvas of editable artboards. You pick one, adjust it, and ask Claude to implement it. It is a research preview on paid plans. - Previewing while it works. In the desktop app, Claude Code can start your dev server, open it in a Browser pane, and check its own changes.
- A connection to Claude Design. Claude Design, a separate Anthropic Labs product for prototypes and visual work, can pass a finished design to Claude Code as a handoff bundle.
What matters more than the agent
Whichever you choose, the same habits decide the quality of the result:
- Write a real brief. Product, audience, screens, mood, and constraints such as screen size and brand colors.
- Ask for several directions. Three deliberately different options beat ten variations of one.
- Compare them side by side. Differences in hierarchy and tone are obvious next to each other and easy to miss one at a time.
- Give specific feedback. Name the element and the change, and say what to keep.
- Write your design system down. A DESIGN.md file keeps every new screen consistent, and both agents can read it.
The full workflow, with prompts you can copy, is in how to design UI with Codex, and most of it applies to Claude Code too.
Where Codex Design fits
Codex Design is our plugin for Codex. It adds what Codex does not have built in: a canvas where screens appear side by side as live HTML, next to your reference images, with visual editing of fonts, colors, and spacing. If you use Claude Code, its /design skill covers similar ground.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for frontend design, Codex or Claude Code?
Neither wins on every project. Both can write strong HTML, CSS, and framework code. The difference is the tooling around them: Codex adds built-in image generation, and Claude Code adds an artboard skill and app previews in its desktop app. Try the same brief in both and compare the results side by side.
Is Claude Design the same as Claude Code?
No. Claude Design is a separate Anthropic Labs product for creating prototypes, slides, and other visual work through conversation. Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. A design made in Claude Design can be handed off to Claude Code to build.
Can I use both?
Yes. They work on the same files, so you can explore directions in one and implement in the other. Keep shared rules in a DESIGN.md file so both follow the same design system.
