Codex Design vs Lovable.

Lovable and Codex Design both turn a conversation into an interface, but they do different jobs. Lovable builds, hosts, and runs a complete web app, backend included. Codex Design is a design canvas for Codex, for exploring and refining screens before Codex builds them in your own project.

The short answer

If you want a live web app with a database and sign-in without setting up a development environment, Lovable is the better tool. If you build with Codex and want to get the design right before you build, Codex Design is the better fit. The two overlap less than they seem: Lovable is an app builder with hosting, and Codex Design is the design step of a Codex workflow.

  • Choose Lovable if you want a full-stack app online quickly, don’t want to manage a codebase or hosting, or work with non-developers who need to make changes.
  • Choose Codex Design if you already use Codex, want to compare several design directions side by side, and want to choose your own stack and hosting.

What each tool is

Lovable describes itself as a full-stack AI development platform for building, iterating on, and deploying web applications. You chat with it, and it builds an app with a frontend, backend, database, authentication, and integrations. New projects use TanStack Start, with a PostgreSQL database through Lovable’s built-in backend or Supabase. You can publish to a lovable.app address on any plan, keep the code in sync with a GitHub repository, and point at elements in the preview to describe changes.

Codex Design is our independent plugin for Codex. It adds a local canvas where Codex places the screens it designs as live HTML pages, next to mockup images and your references. Select an element to change its font, color, or spacing in a sidebar, or keep refining by asking Codex. Your canvas projects are stored on your computer.

When to choose Lovable

Lovable is the better pick in these cases:

  • You want a whole product, not a screen. Lovable sets up the frontend, backend, database, and authentication together, so a prototype can store real data and have real users.
  • You don’t want to manage hosting. When you publish, Lovable deploys your project to its own URL. Publishing to a lovable.app address is free on all plans, and paid plans add custom domains.
  • Non-developers will make changes. Teammates can select an element in the preview and describe the change, or edit text inline, without touching code.
  • Your team is growing. Lovable prices by credits rather than seats, and workspaces can have unlimited members on every plan.
  • You still want the code. Git sync keeps a repository in step with your project on any plan, and paid plans can download the whole project as a .zip.

When to choose Codex Design

  • You’re designing, not shipping yet. Codex Design is made for putting several directions side by side on one canvas, next to your references and mockup images Codex generates, before anyone commits to one.
  • You want to choose the stack. Lovable picks the framework and database for every project. Codex works in your existing repository, so the design you pick can be built with the tools you already use.
  • You want direct visual edits. Select an element in an HTML mockup and change its font, color, spacing, and other properties in the sidebar.
  • You want your work on your own machine. Canvas projects are stored locally. Codex still processes whatever context you share with it.
  • You want a flat price for the canvas. There is no credit balance in Codex Design. One canvas project is free, and Pro is $5 a month for unlimited projects; Codex usage counts against your Codex plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Codex Design a Lovable alternative?

Only for part of what Lovable does. Codex Design covers the design stage: exploring, comparing, and refining screens in Codex. It doesn’t host apps, add a backend, or manage a database. If you need a hosted full-stack app without your own development setup, Lovable is the better choice.

Can I move from Lovable to Codex later?

Lovable’s Git sync puts your project in a repository on any plan, and paid plans can also download the code as a .zip. Once the code is in a repository, Codex can work on it like any other project.

Does Codex Design host the apps Codex builds?

No. Codex Design is a local design canvas, not a hosting service. How you deploy what Codex builds is up to your own setup.
