ChatGPT Sites: build and publish a website with ChatGPT.
Sites lets you build, host, and share a website by describing it in ChatGPT or Codex, without writing code or setting up hosting. This guide covers how to start, what you can build, how publishing and pricing work, and how to get a site that looks designed rather than generated.

What ChatGPT Sites is
Sites is OpenAI’s way to build, host, and share a website from a conversation. You describe the site, ChatGPT or Codex builds it, and OpenAI hosts it. You can also host web apps, games, or a compatible project you have already built, without a separate deployment setup.
Sites supports HTTP, HTTPS, and WebSockets. Each site can use a D1 database with up to 10 GB of storage and R2 object storage for files. Some frameworks, private networks, databases, and background services are not supported.
How to start a site
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the desktop app.
- Include the word “website” in your prompt, or mention
@Sites, to start the Sites workflow. - Review the first version, then describe changes. You can attach a screenshot or a reference site.
- Return to sites to reopen, edit, save versions, and publish.
Build a [project request dashboard] website for [my operations team]. Let team members submit requests, see who owns each one, update the status, and filter the list. Require people to sign in with their workspace account.
On ChatGPT Enterprise, a workspace admin must enable Sites first. The Codex CLI and IDE extension have no standalone Sites view: you can edit and test a local project there, then create, deploy, and manage the site in ChatGPT on the web or the desktop app.
What you can build
OpenAI’s documentation groups common sites into six patterns:
| Pattern | Example uses |
|---|---|
| Resource hub | Onboarding portal, policy library, launch resource center |
| Dashboard | Campaign performance, sales pipeline, support volume |
| Tracker | Launch tasks, milestones, editorial calendar |
| Request form | Creative briefs, IT access requests, feedback |
| Calculator | Budget scenarios, staffing estimates, timelines |
| Guided process | Onboarding checklist, project kickoff, vendor review |
Publishing and sharing
- A new site is visible only to its owner and workspace admins until you change its access.
- Depending on your workspace, you can share with selected users or groups, invited external viewers, or the public.
- Every Sites deployment URL is a production deployment. To review a build first, ask ChatGPT to save a version without deploying it.
- Before you share, test the site as an intended visitor, check that it exposes no sensitive data, and choose the narrowest audience that works.
Pricing
Hosting is free through December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, OpenAI turns on metering: your plan includes a monthly hosting allowance, and you pay only for usage above it. OpenAI’s proposed rates, in credits:
| What you use | Unit | Approx. credits |
|---|---|---|
| Site without storage | 1 site per month | 0 |
| Site with storage (including an empty database) | 1 site per month | 25 |
| Traffic | 100,000 requests | 16 |
| Database storage | 1 GiB for a month | 150 |
| File storage | 1 GiB for a month | 3.75 |
| Custom domain (registration costs extra) | 1 domain per month | 25 |
A page visit typically generates 30–50 requests. You can create as many sites as you want.
Limits and rules
- Payments must go through a third-party payment processor; card data can’t be handled by your site or OpenAI.
- Sites can’t be used to process protected health information, target children under 13, distribute malware, enable phishing, or impersonate people or organizations.
- For current availability and limits, check OpenAI’s Help Center.
Make your site look designed, not generated
Sites builds what you describe, so the design is only as specific as your brief. Three habits help:
- Set an art direction and constraints before building: fonts, colors, one accent, and layout ideas. A DESIGN.md file holds them for every page.
- Explore directions before you commit. Ask Codex for two or three homepage directions as HTML files and compare them side by side on a Codex Design canvas, then build the site from the one you pick.
- Review for generic patterns like purple gradients and identical card grids. See AI UI design tells.
Before building the site, design the homepage in three directions as separate HTML files at 1440×900: [warm editorial], [bold and dark], [soft and friendly]. Same content in each. Avoid purple gradients, glassmorphism, and identical three-card grids.
